Program Description

Course taught in accordance with existing State regulations. Upon successful completion students will be prepared to test to become certified as a Nursing Assistant.

Skills & Competencies

Function as an unlicensed individual in the role of a nurse aide, within the legal and ethical standards as regulated by Pennsylvania Department of Education. Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication skills. Apply the basic principles of infection control. Assist with basic emergency procedures. Demonstrate behavior that maintains residents and/or client rights. Demonstrate behavior that promotes resident or client's independence and prevents abuse. Demonstrate knowledge and apply the principles of basic nutrition to prevent neglect and exploitation. Recognize and report abnormal signs and symptoms of common diseases and conditions of body systems. Provide a safe, clean environment. Provide personal care as directed by the licensed nurse. Provide care to a resident when death is imminent. Demonstrate skills that incorporate principles of restorative care under the direction of a licensed nurse. Demonstrate basic skills by identifying the psychosocial characteristics of the populations being served in the nursing facility and/or by the health care agency including persons with mental retardation, mental illness, Alzheimer Disease, and related disorders that cause cognitive impairment. Demonstrate basic principles of validation therapy or other intervention strategies. Demonstrate intervention strategies to prevent abuse and neglect of cognitively impaired residents.
