Program Description
This course is a 50-hour Physical Therapy Aide Hybrid course preparing students for the growing field of Physical Therapy. The Physical Therapy Aide is generally responsible for carrying out the non-technical duties of physical therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering devices and supplies, and transporting patients, working under the direction of the physcial therapist. Furthermore, these workers assist physical therapists in providing services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, and prevent or limit permanent physical disabilities in patients suffering from injuries or disease. Physical Therapy Aides may be employed in nursing homes, hospitals, sports rehabilitation centers or orthopedic clinics. This hybrid course will meet for seven in-person class sessions. The remainder of the class will be completed online. The online portion will include reading assignments, discussions, powerpoint presentations, workbooks and evaluations of grades.
Skills & Competencies
Basic Anatomy
Range of motions and stretching, direction and range of movement and stretching and strengthening excercises
Excercise equipment and safety including transferring fro a wheelchair to a chair, a chair to a wheelchair and a bed to a chair/wheelchair
Ambulation and gait including tips on pre-amulation training, crutches,canes, gait training and deviations and normal gait modalities
Treatment including heat/cold, paraffin bath, ultrasound, bivalve cast, electrical stimulation units
Vital signs including understanding normal and the impact of abnormal: heart rate, blood pressure, respirations and physical appearance
Medical terminology and abbreviations including how they are used in charting
The total hip replacement patient- precautions and common treatment programs
The amputee patient- definitions, why amputations occur, PT treatment, common complications, ADL training, fitting and training with a prosthesis
The spinal cord injury patient- anatomy of the spinal cord, level of injury, projected level of function, medical complications, PT treatment, skin care, weight shifting and pressure relief, bracing and stabliization
The Traumatic Brain Injury patient- definition, scope of injury, common PT treatment, complications
