Program Description
Approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the Nurse Aide Training Program is an intensive 120-hour course consisting of classroom instruction, skills laboratory experience, and hands-on training at the clinical site. Upon successful completion, students will be eligible to take the National Nurse Aide Assessment Program (NNAAP) Competency Exam for enrollment eligibility on the Nurse Aide registry for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Participants will learn provide basic personal care to individuals that require assistance with activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, feeding, mouth care, toileting, and ambulation. Theory content includes , communication, infection control, resident rights, prevention of abuse or neglect, and promotion of resident independence. This program will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the needs of clients in long-term care facilities, hospitals or home care agencies. Nurse aide training is a steppingstone to a pathway in healthcare and professional. Generally, this clock hour course is outlined to approximately 12 hours per week for 10 weeks. Some Nurse Aide course offerings may be structured differently which can alter the length and duration of the course.
Skills & Competencies
Describe the role and function of the nurse aide including at least three legal limitations of the role. Demonstrate effective non-verbal and verbal communication; understand and explain the difference between an open ended and closed ended question. Articulate how a disease is transmitted, demonstrate the basic principles of infection control to include correct hand-washing techniques and correct usage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Discuss OSHA Standards including universal/standard precaution to prevent the transmission of pathogens. Describe appropriate nurse aide action in an emergency. Demonstrate an understanding of the basic nutrition principles. Identify at least three therapeutic diets and why following a resident’s meal card is important. Understand and demonstrate proper care that maintains residents’ rights. Understand and explain an abuse-free environment and the proper procedures to report abuse and neglect. Recognize and report at least two signs and/or symptoms of eight common diseases and conditions affecting residents. Demonstrate personal care and basic nursing skills under the direction of a registered nurse. Describe the five psychological stages of grief/loss/death and the nurse aide’s role in the needs of the dying resident.
