Program Description
A career in the field of Medical Coding provides skilled professionals with exciting career opportunities working in a physician’s office, group practice, hospital, or other health care facility. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in medical records and the health information field is projected to grow 13 percent from 2016 to 2026. This is due to the aging population requiring medical care, constant changes to the rules and regulations, and the increase in new medical procedures and treatments. The student will learn principles of medical coding related to the three main code books: CPT, ICD-10-CM Code Set and HCPCS Level II. The Medical coding curriculum includes six courses (four of which are taken in Medical Billing program). Upon successful completion of these courses, the student will be eligible for their certification examination through the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC). The exam is included as part of the Medical Coding course and no additional fees are required. The Certified Professional Coder (CPC) designation is awarded upon successful completion of the exam
