Description of Training Provider

The Community College of Allegheny County prepares individuals to succeed in a complex global society by providing affordable access to high quality career and transfer education delivered in a diverse, caring, and innovative learning environment.

Program Description

The Carpentry Apprenticeship program is a four-year certificate program offering qualifying applicants, occupational training under the sponsorship of the local Joint Apprenticeship Committee of the Building Trades and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor. The training prepares students to work in commercial building construction as skilled carpenters. Students may apply the 28 academic credits of the program toward an Associate's degree in Building Construction Estimating or Supervision.

Skills & Competencies

Graduates will have had classroom and shop training and job experience in carpentry. Upon completion of the Certificate and the job experience hours required by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, they may work in commercial building construction as a skilled carpenter.

Upon successful completion of this program, graduates will:
  1. Apply safety standards in all aspects of the carpentry trade as defined by and governed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Joint Apprenticeship Committee of the Building Trades and the Pennsylvania Department of Labor.
  2. Demonstrate manipulative skills in carpentry construction including deck, roof systems, hardware and framing.
  3. Operate a wide range of hand, power and air tools and instrumentation.
  4. Interpret structural blueprints and construct building systems.
  5. Estimate quantities and costs of items in commercial construction, including the utilization of green materials.
  6. Communicate effectively using terminology appropriate to the trade and a diverse environment.
