Description of Training Provider

Program Description

The program provides a broad overview of manufacturing, including introduction to metalworking, industrial safety and forklift training, measurement tools and systems, blueprint reading, equipment maintenance, instruction and use of hand tools, lathes, drill presses, milling machines, band saws, CNC machining and welding. The program also covers workplace skills and communications.
 
The Metalwork training is a PA State registered pre-apprenticeship program consisting of 12-16 weeks of online, in-person or a hybrid schedule of instruction (mix of online and in-person), up to 24 hours per week, to be supplemented by in-person or virtual class visits to factory and shop locations of potential employers. At the end of the program, the students will be enrolled to take the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) exam for Measurement, Materials, and Safety Certification. Employment preparation is included in the coursework including resume assistance and interview preparation. Program graduates will work with the Career Coach for job placement.
 
Students will perform hands-on projects during the training program. If the program is taught fully online, students will participate in virtual demonstrations/simulations.
 

Skills & Competencies

Workplace skills required to be successful in the manufacturing environment.
Safety, including OSHA 10 certification & Forklift training and certification.
Proper and safe use of hand and bench tools: Screwdrivers, Pliers, Hammers, chisels, scribers, punches, prybars, wrenches, bench vise, clamps, files, de-burring, abrasives, drills, taps, dies.
Proper and safe use of shop machinery including: Metal cutting saws; horizontal band, vertical band, cold saws, abrasive saws, drill presses, machine tools, milling & turning, manual & CNC, Grinders & belt grinders, materials handling, pallet jacks, hand trucks, forklifts, cranes.
Shop math including fractions and use of decimal math in shops, add and subtract fractions, convert to decimal, converting metric/English back and forth.
Define measurement types, basic, semi precision and precision, tolerance, GD&T
