Job Purpose

Brenner Recycling is a locally owned and operated scrap recycling facility; purchasing, preparing, and transporting unwanted post-consumer items and industrial scrap for recycling into new raw materials.  General Laborer hand separates and weighs incoming materials, operates various processing equipment (e.g., alligator shear, wire stripper, baler, can separator, etc.) and material handling equipment to prepare materials for shipment. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide customer service to assist suppliers with the unloading and staging of incoming materials
  • Inspect, evaluate, and weigh incoming materials using the scale and purchasing software to grade incoming materials and obtain accurate weights
  • Receive unprocessed materials and sort/separate the materials by grade, inventory, type, and family to specification
  • Communicate with supervisor and other employees through verbal, written, and/or radio communication
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a safe and clean condition at all times
  • Attend and participate in all safety, toolbox, and other assigned training unless specifically excused
  • Cooperate with and exhibit respect to other employees, customers, vendors, and visitors
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor

Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED certification, or six months to one year related experience and/or training preferred
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical required
  • Ability to proficiently speak and understand written and verbal English required
  • Ability to speak Spanish preferred, though not required
  • Basic knowledge of the physical characteristics used to identify ferrous and non-ferrous metals preferred
  • Will provide training, but previous possession of operator’s certificate/license for the operation of forklifts, skid-steers, and other mobile equipment preferred
  • Previous experience in a scrap facility preferred

Working Conditions

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving equipment and machinery; scrap materials, and outside weather conditions.  The employee is regularly required to wear personal protective equipment including, but not limited to, safety-toe shoes, hardhat, protective eyewear, gloves, and hearing protection.  Workload may be unpredictable and pressure can be substantial during peak times.   

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.  The employee is frequently required to walk; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee is occasionally required to sit.  The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
